Reframing a Learning Mindset to Being More Curious

Reframing a Learning Mindset

I read, watch, and listen to a lot of things. Sometimes I write things down, usually in a notepad that I eventually misplace, but most of the time I don’t. It just stays in my head.

Recently, I heard someone talking about the difference between how we learn and retain things when we’re truly curious about them. I can’t remember where I heard this or who was talking about it, but I’ve been thinking about it over the past week or so.

My marketing career has mostly focused on direct marketing and digital marketing. Very little brand marketing. I actually never thought it was something I was capable of because I didn’t feel like I had the creativity nor the ability to do it at a large company.

Both are incorrect assumptions.

About a year ago, Seth had a prompt in The Marketing Seminar in which he talked about direct versus brand marketing. Since then, I’ve been interested in learning more, bought books on the subject, but there have always been other things that have been prioritized.

Then, this week, I decided to reframe my interest in brand marketing. I decided to change my frame from wanting to learn about brand marketing to being curious about brand marketing. I’m also curious about how to create a better way to do cold sales outreach and how to create better, more human messaging around this.

It’s kind of strange, but once I did this, my approach changed. I feel like I don’t have to memorize or be able to immediately apply what I learn. I’m not going to be tested on it (even though I never was going to be in the first place). But there’s such a weird mentality around learning compared to being curious.

We’ll see what happens and if it actually makes a difference in the knowledge I come away with and the impact it has on my career trajectory, but so far it feels good.
